Automattic, the company that owns WordPress.com, bought the messaging app Beeper last year for $125 million. They merged it with Texts.com, another similar service they had acquired earlier. Now, Beeper is launching redesigned apps for iOS and desktop in beta after the merger.

Faster and More Efficient Apps

Beeper mentioned in a blog post that the new desktop app is built using the foundation of the Texts.com app, while the iOS app has been created from scratch. The company claims these new apps are faster and use less battery power.

Smooth Transition to New Apps

Kishan Bagaria, the founder of Texts.com, shared on X (formerly Twitter) that users can continue using the old app for now. However, Beeper will eventually offer a simple way to move to the new apps.

Enhanced Privacy and Security

Currently, Beeper Cloud stores messages and login details for different messaging services. But in upcoming updates, all this data will be stored directly on users’ devices. The new apps will also introduce on-device encryption for better privacy and security. Additionally, users will be able to manage multiple accounts for the same messaging service.

Bagaria also revealed that the Mac app will soon support sending and receiving iMessages.

Beeper was founded by Eric Migicovsky, who also created the Pebble smartwatch and was a partner at Y Combinator. After Automattic acquired Beeper, Migicovsky became the company’s head of messaging. However, last month, he announced that he is shifting his focus back to rebuilding Pebble.
